Yes. I find that people rarely think about this and just consider all electric cars better for the environment.

 It’s true that the electricity is often generated by a fossil fuel firing plant..the question is (and I don’t know the answer) : Is the fossil fuel used to generate the electricity for the battery equal to or less than the fuel burned for a normal combustion engine car to go the same distance?  Moreover, the electricty generated at a power plant comes from a single point source and may have better pollution control methods than a mobile vehicle.  All in all, I’d suspect, but don’t have the data, that the electric car has a smaller footprint over all than the normal ICE car.
